“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world”
What is the BALANCED view of this verse ?
It does NOT mean that we cannot enjoy a good meal or some music or watching a sunset as we stroll through a meadow.
Many times Bible writers use a negative to show the IMPORTANCE of what they are trying to stress.
Compare Luke 14:26 “If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children. and brethren. and sisters. yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple”
The meaning here is just to show how MUCH we are to love, worship and obey Christ…. and not that we are actually to hate our family and ourselves.
BALANCE is the hardest thing for humans to achieve…. on the one hand we have folks who deny themselves anything good and pleasant and may even inflict bodily harm on themselves in an effort at self-denial….. and on the the other hand we have many that live for ease, comfort and pleasure and have absolutely no self-discipline….. these are the two extremes….
Let us resolve today to focus our attention on pleasing GOD in every thing as we make HIM the center of our existence…. while being content with our daily lot…. and thankful for the pleasant things that He provides for us to enjoy, while AVOIDING GREED and COVETOUSNESS…. and exercising a little self-discipline for our own good.
