Faith – Part 2

1 Kings 17 …. the whole chapter

First, the OBEDIENCE of Elijah… He did everything the Lord told Him to do…

Second, the provision of God for all the physical needs of Elijah…. Can you imagine, the birds brought him food every day, twice a day ?…. he did not question, as we might do, where did it come from ? it might have germs or make me sick ?… NO… God sent it for him and it was for his health and well-being, no matter what our doctors and scientists might have to say about that.

When the brook dried up…. God sent him to a woman that he did not know…. the woman told him that she was going in to make the last meal she had for herself and her son…. and Elijah says, “feed me FIRST”…. the sheer impertinence of that demand… but he also told her that God would provide for her and her son.

She exercised FAITH in her WORKS…. by OBEDIENCE, she did what she was told to do… and God worked a miracle and they all ate for many days from the very “small meal”…. but the story does not end there…. her child dies…. imagine that !

After both her and Elijah have been totally obedient to God… why should this catstrophe happen ???…. she was upset and so was Elijah….. but in FAITH, he took the child and prayed for him to live…. and God brought back the child from the dead….

Finally…. at the end of the chapter the woman “gets it”… and gives glory to God for his awesome power.

The Jews saw miracle afer miracle after miracle…. but each time they were confronted by another tragedy, they murmured and complained…. INSTEAD of exercising FAITH in GOD’s ability to do the impossible (when He had already shown them what He was capable of).

What about us ?  Do we believe that God is able to do anything ? …. or do we only believe He can do the “easy” things ?

We run to the doctor and/or swallow pills every time we feel sick….. we buy insurance policies for everything…. and only when all these fail do we call out to God “as a last resort” (since we have no other choice) and just MAYBE He will help us….. what do you think ?…… where is your FAITH ?…. and in what do you TRUST ?…. do you have any FAITH at all ?

FAITH can only grow if it is tested…. testing is never pleasant…. testing is a frightening experience to go through….. we dont want to be tested…. we just want everything to go along smoothly, perfectly….. unfortunately, the real world is not like that and there WILL be problems in the lives of everybody…. what do you do when you have a problem ? look for a human solution ?

You know the heathen say that GOD is a crutch for weak-minded and inferior people….. but what does God say about them:

“He hath shown strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.” (Luke 1:51 – 53  and then read also 1 Samuel 2:1 – 10)

Prayer for Today:

Loving Heavenly Father,  O that we would trust you more… and really BELIEVE that you care for us…. we are your little children and we want to obey you…. please dont be angry with us and keep us from failing you when we are tested …. in Jesus name we pray. Amen

time

I feel like there is never enough time…. many things I need to do are just not getting done as the months roll on…. and as for the things I like to do, well, I may NEVER have time for those !

and yet…. I refuse to  compromise my sleep, exercise and food regimen…. and my time with God…. gosh…. it would be SO easy to shorten my night’s sleep, skip exercise and gobble food (or miss it altogether)…. and what about prayer time, Bible study and praise and worship ?…. even if not cut-out entirely, surely cut-down (in order to get real with life)….

Instead… I step back and look at the bigger picture…. our whole existence here on Earth is to prepare us for eternity… which has a different value-system….  our time spent praising God and being His “arms and legs” on Earth is in fact the MOST IMPORTANT thing we could possibly do each day….  second in importance, is our bodily maintenance, without adequate sleep, food and exercise, how can we expect to function properly over the longterm ?

The people of Bible days had so much time on their hands….. but for us, it seems like the days are getting shorter and the years going by faster… and we are caught in the wirlwind.

Clearly, if there is insufficient time… SOMETHING will have to go…. does it matter if the car is washed or the house tidy ? do you really have to spend so much time talking to people ?…… examine priorities… and practice time managemnet… and here are some Bible verses to think about:

Luke 10:38 -42 “Now it came to pass, as they went…………… Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her”

Ephesians 5:15 – 17 “See, then, that ye walk circumspectly……. understanding what the will of the Lord is”

Psalm 89:47 “Remember how short my time is ! Why hast thou made all men in vain ?”

Psalm 63:1 “O God, thou art my God, early will I seek thee;…….”

Psalm 39:5 “Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth, and mine age is as nothing before thee….. ”

Psalm 90:12 “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”

Isaiah 40:29-31 “He giveth power to the faint; and to those who have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall. But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

This last one…. I write it completely out (for those that do not look up any verses)

Let this be your comfort and experience today…. regardless of how much or little you accomplish.
